Task Sheet  C1b-4

Tectonic plate theory,Volcanoes and Eathquakes

The ‘How Science Works’ aspect of this course incorporates various skills such as interpreting graphs and other data. It also has an emphasis on the meanings of keywords and the correct use of these in ISAs and experimental write –ups.

Another skill important in scientific work is that of being able to take the essential findings and display them in the correct form.

What to do next:

1.    In 79AD Mount Vesuvius erupted killing thousands and destroying the town of Pompeii. A film is being made of the eruption and your task is to complete the scenes on the storyboard.

2.    Login to www.upd8.org.uk/ Download the activity 'Pompeii: the movie'. Print it off (in colour if you can) and it will give you details of the activity.

Now do these questions:

A.    List the top ten biggest eruptions in history.

B.    Explain using a labelled diagram how volcanoes form.

C.    Volcanoes are normally found at tectonic plate boundaries. Earthquake zones and FoldMountains are also found in these areas. Use tectonic plate theory to explain why these phenomena occur.
