Conduction, Convection and Radiation

       Methods of Transferring Thermal Energy

Task A  (Time Guide :- 60 mins max)

Look carefully at the Thermal Transfer PowerPoint .

 

Use it to help you prepare clear notes in your exercise book with fully labelled diagrams on how heat (thermal) energy is transferred by:-

1.     Conduction, including why metal conducts better than plastic and that gases are poor thermal conductors

2.     Convection, including a diagram to show convection taking place in an electric kettle as it heats up the water

3.     Radiation, including a fully labelled diagram to show what happens in a red hot grill with a slice of bread under the grill.

  

Key Words that should be included in your notes but is not exhaustive:-

Metal atom, free electrons, particles, vibrations, non-metal, conductor, insulator, convection current, density, vacuum, medium, emit, absorb.

 

Task B   (Time Guide :- 60 mins max)

 

Home Audit

 

1.   For your bedroom complete the following table:-

 

Where in your bedroom is thermal energy lost?

Is it lost by conduction, convection or radiation?

How is or could this energy loss be reduced?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2.  Present your findings in an A4 handout to your parents with your suggestions. A copy needs to be stuck into your exercise book too.

 

Task C    (Time Guide :- 50 mins max)

EXTREME Holiday Destinations!

 

1.     Choose your holiday destination, be it cold or hot.  You may wish to go to Iceland in November to swim in the hot springs or the Jordanian desert to see Petra.   You will be walking/trekking and carrying your belongings with you. 

2.     Write the part of the trip dossier that tells you what clothes and other equipment you need to take with you in order to survive the experience with enjoyment. 

3.     You must explain clearly using scientific language why you have made the recommendations that you have.  Do include photographs where possible. 

4.     Hints and tips can be got from the downloadable trip dossiers from travel companies such as Explore and using GOOGLE for ‘clothing for Arctic/desert travel’
