Energy Types and Efficiency

What to do next:

Task A      (Time Guide :- 15 mins max)

1.     Insert the names of the different types of energy into the correct columns

Chemical energy; kinetic energy; gravitational potential energy; sound energy; light energy; elastic energy; thermal energy; nuclear energy; electrical energy

Stored Energy

Movement Energy

Hint: there are only four types in the first column.

Task B      (Time Guide :- 60 mins max)

Energy In   =   Useful Forms of Energy Given Out + ‘Wasted Energy’   =   Energy Out

2.     The equation above is a statement of the ……C…………………….…….. of energy.

3.     Copy and complete the table below.

Machine

Energy In    /J

Transferred Energy  /J

Thermal Energy     Kinetic Energy      Sound Energy

4.     Draw 4 Sankey Diagrams on graph/squared paper to illustrate the information in the table above.

Example Sankey Diagram

Sankey Diagram PowerPoint – will help remind you how to draw them

Task C     (Time Guide :- 60 mins max)

Efficiency =  Useful Energy Out  x  100%

     Total energy In

5.     Calculate the efficiency of each machine listed in Task B, using the information from the table in Task B. (Remember that your answer should be less than 100%)

Example Calculation

6.     Explain why it is important that you purchase the most energy efficient appliances.

7.     Using on-line catalogues and/or manufactures websites choose a Fridge/Freezer for your family.  State how many adults and children there are in the family and give your reasons for choosing the one you have.  You will need to include a record of the sites you have used, a hard copy of the information on your chosen appliance and its cost.
